Centaflex A Type 0 and Type 0–S – What Is the Difference?
When selecting or replacing a Centaflex A coupling element, it’s essential to know whether your application requires Type 0 or Type 0–S. Both types belong to the same CENTAFLEX A series and share identical elastic performance—but differ in their mounting design and mechanical functionality.
🔧 Type 0 – Standard Axial and Radial Fit
Type 0 is the standard coupling configuration, mounted using only bolts through the outer flange into the hub. This version is widely used in fixed drives where axial positioning is stable and no floating movement is required.
✅ Best suited for:
- Compact installations
- Diesel engine drives with fixed mounting plates
- Generator sets and pump systems with rigid alignment
- Applications where space is limited and minimal movement is expected
🔧 Type 0–S – With Pins for Axial Float and Easier Removal
Type 0–S includes both bolts and additional axial guide pins. These pins allow the coupling element to float slightly in the axial direction, providing:
- Easier installation and replacement (especially in confined spaces)
- Tolerance for thermal expansion and slight shaft movement
- Reduced stress on mounting bolts during operation
✅ Best suited for:
- Equipment that experiences temperature-induced shaft elongation
- Marine drives, mobile systems, or vibration-sensitive installations
- Service environments where fast coupling replacement is required
Many OEMs, including those in the railway, wind power, and marine sectors, prefer Type 0–S for its ease of maintenance and flexibility in dynamic applications.
⚙️ Interchangeability – With Caution
While Centaflex A Type 0 and Type 0–S elements share identical torque ratings, sizes, and Shore hardness options, they are not direct replacements for one another without modifying the mounting setup.
That said, it is technically possible to convert from one type to the other — but it must be done using the correct mounting hardware:
- Switching from Type 0 to Type 0–S: requires adding guide pins and using a compatible screw + pin set
- Converting from Type 0–S to Type 0: requires removing guide pins and using a standard screw set only
✅ At AWELASTIC.com, we supply all original CENTA screw sets and pin sets for each type and size, allowing you to perform a proper and secure installation.
⚠️ Important: If you modify the original OEM configuration, all performance risks and warranty considerations fall under your responsibility. We strongly recommend matching your machine’s original build unless advised otherwise by the equipment manufacturer.
